Signs your panel may need an upgrade
- Breakers that trip often, especially when several appliances run at once.
- Lights that dim when large appliances start.
- An older panel with fuses, or a panel brand an inspector or insurer has questioned.
- Plans to add an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub or a home addition.
- A panel that feels warm, buzzes or shows signs of scorching.
What an upgrade involves
The electrician works out how much capacity your home needs, replaces or upgrades the panel and breakers, and coordinates with the utility if the service to the house needs to change. Most panel upgrades require a permit and inspection.
Common questions
How do I know what size panel I need?
The electrician calculates it from your current appliances and anything you plan to add, such as an EV charger or heat pump. That calculation decides whether an upgrade is needed.
Will the power be off during the upgrade?
Yes, for part of the job. The electrician can tell you how long to expect when they quote.
